High
Valley Appellation, Lake County, CA
1st Time to be to be offered
in Green Bay
Simply put, there is no other grape-growing site on Earth
quite like High Valley Appellation. Located within Lake County CA, which
is north of Napa and east of Mendocino, and about two hours from San
Francisco.
On August 1, 2005, High Valley was designated an American
Viticultural Area (AVA), making it one California's newest Appellations.
This heavenly spot measures just a mile wide and five miles long,
running east to west unlike other coastal valleys. Yet High Valley's
unique combination of volcanic and alluvial soils, combined with myriad
microclimates, makes it one of the finest spots in the world to
cultivate premium-quality grapes.
High Valley's
unique geological creation resulting from numerous volcanic eruptions
and subsequent thousands of years of erosion has created an abundant of
distinctive characteristics:
-
Topography
- A valley floor of 1,800 feet with High Valley ridges
rising above 3,000 feet
-
Geology
- An East–West valley unique to California Coastal Range
-
Soils
- Volcanic soils on the hillsides while alluvial fans and benches
on the valley floor
-
Microclimates
- Ranging as low as Region 2 and as high as Region 4
with temperature swings of 40 to 50 degrees during the growing
season
Some refer to Lake
County as the “New Napa North”. High Valley AVA currently hosts three
winery’s, with Brassfield being the first in distribution. At this point
in time High Valley is basically undisturbed and under commercialized as
far as wine tourism is involved which has lead it to being undiscovered.
